Our Political Party System Problem

We have a problem in the US. Our political system. Were we to have only one, things would be not only a lot more easier to understand, but my more than ample gut tells me that it would be much more streamlined and efficient.

Our problem isn’t just that we have a political system, but rather that we have at least TWO political systems. Were there any chances that they would be able to work together like joint ventures successfully do in the real business world, then life would be a heckuva different and different(not to mention cheaper!) place to be.

I sat in on a conference call placed by a US Congressman to his constituency a few weeks back. During the course of the call, callers were asking him why certain things weren’t happening and in some cases why it seemed that NOTHING was happening. The Congressman made an interesting comment in reply – when you’re not the party in the majority (or in power) you’re not going to be able to get anything done.

Frankly, I think it goes even further than this. The party in the minority will fight everything that the majority promotes, simply because it wasn’t their idea, and the opposite is true it would appear that the party in the majority really doesn’t give two hoots in hell about the minority interests that don’t suit their agenda.

This may come as a great shock to the folks up on The Hill downtown – but our country is hurting right now and we’ve got some serious problems. Why can’t folks up on The Hill put aside the petty party politics that are doing nothing than stagnating America in a major time of need, and work together to rebuild our great country?

It may seem simplistic (most solutions really are) but is that really too much to ask? After all, doing what’s best FOR AMERICA is what their job really is – NOT doing what’s best for their party.
