Spirit – Lots of violence and no socially redeeming value – Avoid this one!

Stars: Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson, Sara Paulson, Samuel L. Jackson, Gabriel Macht and others

Final Grade: D-

Summary: I hate having to write an article like this. Frankly I LIKE Samuel Jackson, Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson, et al. But this film is pure junk and I would love to see these talented folks doing their stuff in a much higher quality and calibre film than this!

Our story starts out with the masked hero trying to get information out of a dying witness. Soon the fists and bullets start flying as The Spirit(Macht) and his enemy The Octopus(Jackson) go at each other.

The size of the guns that Octopus uses would break the wrists of most men when fired the way that the Octopus does, but then, this is a movie adapted from a very violent and bloody comic book. The Spirit.

We get a flashback to the Spirit’s childhood days enough to learn that his sweetheart back then is now one of the villains in this movie – Sand Saref (Mendes).

So, the movie goes on with Saref fighting the Octopus and Spirit after both of them.

What they’re all fighting over is the contents of two boxes. Octopus, come to find out, has been trying his hand at genetic engineering. He brought Spirit back to live and granted him immortality and self healing powers through his special serum. How he need to remove Spirit from the scene since Spirit was only an experiment and drink the contents of one of the boxes – the presumed blood of an ancient Greek god.

Saref wants the other box because it contains a magical coat she’s been wanting.

To say this movie is just stupid is giving it a complement. To say this movie is incredibly violent with basically no socially redeeming value, wouldn’t, in my opinion, be too far off the mark.

Frankly, we have enough graphic violence in life already, we don’t need to be adding this kind of crap to our lives via the silver screen. I recommend you see something else at the theater. This movie also should have at least an R rating for violence. It’s earned it!

I’m Don Rima, and that’s the way I saw it, From Where I Stand.
