Oh, No, Bono! Please go back and read your history books!

Oh, No, Bono! Please go back and read your history books!

“When this man (Obama) is sworn in on Tuesday, it will prove to the world that America really exists.”

When I heard this on NBC this evening I’d had enough of the “news” for one day. Here was Ireland’s U2 singer, Bono, responding to some questions being winged at him by NBC’s Brian Williams at the Lincoln Memorial in DC while the group was doing a warm up for their concert. Why we think that singers and celebrities are the end all when it comes to intellectual thought, I’ll never know!

Bono, this may come as a great shock, but we’ve been around for well over 200 years!

When our forefathers put this land together, they knew, as we do now and everyone since then has known, that America is an evolving place. It’s a place of opportunity and opportunity is what you make of it. I look at many of the families that came over here from southeast Asia and Korea during those conflicts and realize that many of them and their children are business owners, lawyers, doctors, technical guru’s and other professional positions. Their families have thrived. Many came over here with little more than the cloths they carried and a few francs in their pockets. I don’t recall ANY of them thinking they had to march, burn down buildings, riot and other displays of civil disobedience to achieve their goals. They just started out and made their own little empires out of very little, while others around them protested and rioted. I would say the same thing for families from the former communist countries, other parts of Europe, Africa and let’s not forget by any means, India. America isn’t perfect, but it is interesting to see just how many people from the rest of the world wish they were here.

Our forefathers knew things weren’t perfect but they designed provisions to grow, change and develop as time, needs and the land required, knowing there would come things that they couldn’t even begin to fathom in 1776, when it all began.

So, I say to Bono and every other Bozo that has these misplaced thoughts that now finally America has arrived, that no, America has been here all along. It has met the challenges of the times and the people. We have succeeded because of our diversity and trials, and that which we have survived has indeed made us stronger, and will continue to.

This week, America opens a new chapter in its future. Let us thank God for America and ask His divine guidance for our new leadership and the change that they bring with them, that the future will be strong and fruitful, and that we may not repeat the errors of our past as we walk into that future.

I’m Don Rima, and that’s how I see it, From Where I Stand.
