I’m not sure what it is about New York City(NYC) that seems to attract every violent act, every crooked cop, mayor and politician, every violent theme and, yes, more violent aliens hell bent on destroying the world, starting with midtown Manhatten. Frankly, if the movies and TV were a proper indicator of a safe place to live, nobody would want to live in NYC!

I’m not sure why I started off this way, but after sitting through Safe and now Avengers, it just hit me as the obvious curiosity of the evening, actually morning since I took my kid to see the midnight showing of Avengers last night.

Frankly, I’ve never seen the parking lot of this theater or any other this totally packed at 3 in the morning! And, for good reason! This is a great flick!

Once again one our secret military installations is working with a piece of space junk they found and don’t fully understand. To them it’s potentially a supply of unlimited energy yet in reality it’s the control mechanism to a space portal through which an alien race, let by Loki(Hiddleston), the evil adopted brother of the Norse God Thor(Hemsworth), is going to take over and enslave humanity. Yeah, this is the typical stuff from the old Marvel comic strips, but then, that’s where the whole super heroes and Avengers concepts started from!

As you would expect, things get out of hand and it’s clear that humanity is in for a world of hurt.

Ah, but the secret agency (SHIELD) in the government has a few aces up their sleeves. They’re called The Avengers and they’re a rag tag team of mutants that really haven’t heard of the concepts of synergy, yet are fast learners.

So, it ends up being Captain America(Evans), Hulk(Ruffalo), Iron Man(Downey), Thor, Hawkeye(Renner) and Black Widow(Johansson) all led by Nick Fury(Jackson) as they fight the invading hordes of aliens who are in the middle of destroying, you guessed it, NYC and life as we know it.

The synergy between the actors is really cool and the way the comic book persona’s are brought to the screen is not only in keeping with the old comic books but does a nice job of bringing out their own individuality characters as well.

The action is non stop and some of the military gear is also really neat! Having an aircraft carrier that’s part ship, and part cloaked hovercraft is really interesting! Also, interesting that the navy has improved on their choices of ship captains as well! Ah, it’s a sailors life for sure.

The ending has you wondering if you’re watching a new flick or a remake of the end of Independence Day, but I’ll let you wait to figure that one out.

Avengers is clearly this weekend’s flick to see! Even though it’s been out since April, it’s finally making the way into the open theater market this weekend and in one near you. I suggest going easy on the Cokes before and during the movie. At 2 hours 22 minutes this is a longer flick and could have you needing to rush out at a time when you most least want to!

I’m Don Rima, and that’s the way I saw it, From Where I Stand.
